The goal of this workshop is to provide you with an understanding of how to craft your graduate school admissions materials and provide examples of what will make you a competitive candidate in the eyes of graduate school admissions committee members. The second goal of this workshop is to provide you with an understanding of how science is generally funded, how to seek out these funding opportunities and how to effectively communicate your science in this format

Monday, June 13 (3-5 PM): Identifying funding opportunities, and writing specific aims
The first workshop will go over how to identify potential funding sources for your scientific
question of interest. This will include an overview of different funding agencies and the typical format of grants in each instance. We will then focus on identifying a major gap (question) in your research area of interest and work to formulate two concise sub-questions (specific aims) whose answers will fill this overall gap. Following this workshop, we will ask you to identify a
funding agency and draft a specific aims page related to your summer project which we will discuss in the following workshop.
Monday, June 20 (3-5 PM): Funding opportunities (cont.)
In this workshop, we will go over what you have written for your specific aims with each of you and briefly learn about the other aspects of grant writing. We will also address any remaining questions you may have about the grant writing process.
Monday, June 27 (3-5 PM): Admissions prep
This workshop will focus on graduate school admissions materials. We will go over examples of drafting personal statements/CVs. This workshop will include insight from special guest, Dr. Jose Moron-Concepcion, Professor of Anesthesiology and Director for the Division of Basic Research.
